Smokin' - Conceptual Portrait Photography with Fuji XT1

When I started with my photography, years and years ago, I was never keen on photographing people.  I was once told that my images, although very nice, looked like post cards.  They never featured my friends or family, only the nature and landscapes surrounding us. I wasn't deterred by it, and kept making images the way I liked.

Beauty of ... Pollution?

It was brutally cold last Sunday when we ventured, before dawn, outside the city hoping for a nice sunrise.  The temperatures were steadily dropping while we were driving away from Edmonton and by the time we reached our destination it was -30 degree Celsius. It was a blessing that there was barely any wind because it felt very cold and we were very happy to be able to take a break in a warm vehicle every 5 minutes or so.. But it was well worth it! We were rewarded with a beautiful sunrise, full of colors and great clouds - a rarity this winter.  What I found fascinating, though while staring at the sky, was the the industrial installations that were surrounding us looked quite amazing against such sky and the light of raising sun was making them even more interesting and, dare I say, beautiful.  All that smoke highlighted by the low sun just added to already interesting and dramatic sky.  It is rather strange to use term "beauty" in the same sentence as industry, smoke and pollution, but judge for yourself. I guess, in a certain light, almost everything is beautiful ;D.. Hope you are going to enjoy this set of pictures from our frozen, beautiful prairies during winter sunrise. Have a wonderful weekend, everybody!! Kasia

Industrial Dawn - Part 2

Photographers often go out of the city in search of a perfect sunrise, just like we did some time ago when we have found an abandoned farm.  Sometimes however, one cannot leave for one reason or another. But even in the industrial part of the city we can find something interesting. The morning light highlights the details and allows us to see that industrial dawn can be as interesting as the rural one. I hope you agree! Kasia

Flying Sunrise

One thing I love about small airplanes, is that they usually fly much lower, than commercial airlines.  Also they usually have much bigger windows to take pictures through.  Morning flights are usually most spectacular.  You can watch an amazing sunrise, and the way the shadows move along the earth.  If you ever have a chance to fly in a small airplane, either early in the morning, or before the sunset, I highly recommend it.  It's good to take a moment and just look and admire the beauty of this place that we call home.  I tried capturing the this beauty.  Enjoy. I thought that with the new year I will have some new pictures to show.... alas not yet. So keeping up with tradition, I will be going through some of the older, but as of yet, "unpublished" photos from last year. I hope you will forgive me. Also having -20C to -30C weather for all month of December, does not make me want to go out anywhere. So the camera is tucked away safely and waiting for a little warmth outside, so I can continue with the a couple of ideas/projects I started in November. In any case here are a couple of pictures where I was experimenting with red flash gels. I still don't understand why a sheet of transparent color plastic is called a gel, but then again I haven't been photographing with flashes long. Enjoy.
