Golden Lake

Sometimes I like to challenge myself.  I know I'm going to, lets say, Elk Island National Park, in the evening.  That usually means a sunset photo session.  Now I only take one or two lenses, and none are wide angle.  I challenge myself to take a good image of the sunset, with a 90mm or a 400mm for example.  It's not easy having only a Canon 5D full frame with a 90mm tilt-shift lens, and a Panasonic G1, with a M42 ring adapter and a 400mm old Minolta lens. Yes the tilt-shift is a little easier to use, since it can quite easily create dreamy, partly focused images.  Still the focus length at 90mm is not really designed for landscape.  I would say the 400mm is more of a landscape lens than the 90mm.  Of course the having the big 400mm on a G1 micro 4/3 camera is not an easy thing to work with either.  The lens is manual focus only, and the Panasonic camera only a digital view finder to look through (or it's little screen), but when pointing the lens at the sun, everything becomes washed out.  Thus the challenge of it all.  Learning to work with the gear that you have.  Is it frustrating?  A little.  Many times I was wishing I brought my wide angle, but then I just narrowed my view, and captured what was available.  Enjoy.

Kids

Funny thing just occurred to me.  I take lots of photos, of everything, but hardly any of my own family.  Maybe it's because I see them all the time?  I don't know.  So that's why I put this compilation of photos, from a couple of our trips this summer.  Yeah I know, my kids are cute.... I mean all you have to do is, look at their parents :)  Enjoy. Sebastian

Bugs, bugs, bugs

I always like macro photography.  Bugs are so fun when they are blow up out of proportion.  Gives me a completely different perspective on the world.  Yes I know these are not remotely macro photography.  I did try it, and found it difficult at best.  First, bugs do move, and they move fast.  Second the focus is never quick enough.  So here are some close ups of some lovely bugs.  Enjoy. Fort Edmonton - Highland Gathering Part 1

Fort Edmonton Highland Gathering, is a yearly event for my family.  We stumbled upon it at one time by accident, and got hooked.  No we are not Scottish, but watching bands practicing their instruments and watching big burly men throw telephone poles, makes for a very fun day.  The best thing of course is haggis. It's all hand made in the traditional scottish way, and if you visit the park that day, you get to try it too.  It's actually quite good, if you stop thinking what it's made of.  Here are some shots from Fort Edmonton and The Highland Gathering. Enjoy. Old

Being childish

Yes, it's been a long 2 months. Long and slow recovery, but everything is getting back to normal. I've been trying with different cameras, and finally a few days ago, I started with my old big cameras. I've been doing all kinds of photography, but mostly I was concentrating on candid shots. I have to say that after using the Panasonic GF1 at the beginning, because it was small and light, it was a big pleasure to be able to hold my Canon 5D. Panasonic GF1 isn't a bad camera, but having a non-electronic view finder is such a beautiful thing. First are pictures taken at local playground with the Panasonic. Enjoy!

A new building and a new name.  Art Gallery of Alberta used to be called Edmonton Art Gallery.  The new building was designed by Randall Stout Architects and it finally opened in January of 2010.  It is a very strange building, and definitely a sight to behold.  There are divided opinion on the building, personally I like it.  It definitely is very photogenic.  Here are some examples. Enjoy. AGA

New server old photos

I have managed to move my entire blog to another hosting location.  I have chosen InMotion Hosting for several reasons, and so far I'm pretty happy the performance of the server, and particularly their technical support.  I was able to talk to a tech at 3:00am in the morning to resolve some issues with the wordpress database.  He was able to help me fix the issue.  I say that's pretty damn good.  Thank you to all my twitter friends that flooded me with choices for web hosting solutions!  You guys are great! Unfortunately because of the move I did not have a lot of time to shoot anything new, so here are some shots I pulled from the archives.  I have a pretty funky shoot on Friday Apr. 23 which will include 3 models, lights, fog machine and the woods.  Ha!  I'm excited!  Enjoy!

Flying Sunrise

One thing I love about small airplanes, is that they usually fly much lower, than commercial airlines.  Also they usually have much bigger windows to take pictures through.  Morning flights are usually most spectacular.  You can watch an amazing sunrise, and the way the shadows move along the earth.  If you ever have a chance to fly in a small airplane, either early in the morning, or before the sunset, I highly recommend it.  It's good to take a moment and just look and admire the beauty of this place that we call home.  I tried capturing the this beauty.  Enjoy. Goodnight to California... and goodbye

I thought what better way to finish the series of posts from California and Disneyland, then with a lovely sunset at Santa Monica beach.  As typical to any sunset at the beach, lots of people came out. There were even some guys that had tripods, huge backpacks and set themselves up right by the ocean.  Personally if I had that gear with me I would probably find some secluded part of the beach so people do not walk in front of the camera, but that's just me.  So goodbye California, hope to see you someday.... Christa

I can consider myself lucky.  I have met one of my favourite photographers, whom I've blog stalking for a while now.  It's none other than Christa Meola. In my opinion she has an amazing way of capturing life as it passes.  It was an awesome meeting, although I was very nervous, almost like a student trying to pass an exam in front of a teacher.  Tons of things I wanted to ask, just completely evaporated out of my head.  It was quite interesting watching her work.  She used us as test subjects, and I was floored by the simplicity of it all.  One camera, one lens, no extra lights... everything very minimalistic, and very, very inspiring.  So a very big thank you, Christa for spending the time with us.  It was inpirational, educational, and wonderful to meet you! ..... I did manage to snap a few shots of Christa working her magic.... and here they are.... enjoy!

Santa Monica

What would a vacation in California be, without seeing the ocean, and sampling of at least one beach?  I thought exactly the same thing.... so off we went to Santa Monica.  Yes there are closer beaches to Anaheim, but Santa Monica it was for a few reasons.  The main reason, was that we were meeting up with an awesome photographer there, namely Christa Meola.  I'll get to that meeting in a later post.... but let's just say, this has made my day.  It was a beautiful day, warm and sunny, albeit a little too windy at times.  The ocean was surprisingly warm.  At least warm  enough to get your legs wet.  The kids had a blast.  At one point my youngest, Sebastian, got pulled in a little by a retreating wave, and fell into the water..... of course I was snapping pictures :) ... Legoland Part 1

If you never been to Legoland California, then I definitely recommend it.  My kids actually liked it a lot better than Disneyland, even though it's a lot smaller.  It is more interactive, and the area where the major US cities are recreated out of legos, is spectacular.  Here is the first part of Legoland.  Enjoy.
